Probationary License and Driver Test
When can I sit for a drive test?
The drive test is subject to the following conditions:
If you are under the age of 21, then you will be required to undertake a minimum of 120 hours (Including at least 10 hours of night driving) of supervised driving before taking the license test.
You must record these hours in the official learner logbook, which must be signed by you and your supervising driver.
You must hold your learner permit for at least twelve month.
Drivers 21 years of age or over but under 25 years of age, you must hold your learner permit for at least six months.
Drivers 25 years of age or over you must hold your learner permit for at least 3 months.
How do I prepare for this test?
The VicRoads drive test is a test to identify whether the driver is ready to drive safely. The best possible way to pass this test is to spend as much time as you can driving on the roads alongwith a supervising driver. VicRoads specifies at least 120 hours of supervised driving for younger and inexperienced drivers.
What can I expect during the test?
The drive test is divided into 3 parts. Your performance in each part will be assessed and recorded by the testing officer. If you do anything unsafe in any part of this test, you test will be stopped immediately and you will fail.

Pre-drive check
You should be able to demonstrate the knowledge of the following controls and the ability to use them:turn indicators,brake lights, handbrake, horn, headligts ( high and low beam), hazard lights, windscreen washer and wipers, windscreen demister, rear window demister (where fitted).

Driving in less challenging situations
This part of the test will be approximately for 5-10 minutes. This will be a test of your basic driving abilities and will take place in low-traffic/ residential areas. At the end of this round of test the testing officer will asked to pull over to the kerb. Your performance will be assessed and recorded by the testing officer.

Driving in more challenging situations
This part of the test will be approximately for 20 minutes. This round of test will test your driving skills in a more complex day-to-day traffic conditions. You will be asked to drive on busy or multiple-lane roads. At the end of this round of test the testing officer will ask you to turn off the engine of the car. At this point your drive test is officilally over. Your performance will be assessed and recorded by the testing officer.

During the test, the testing officer will award points for your driving skills when you demonstrate the following safe driving skills:
